中式算盤

19世紀之前

早期的計算器為純手動式，如算盤和算籌與計算尺等。算盤通常是以滑動的珠子制成。在西方，算盤在印度阿拉伯數(shù)字流行前使用了數(shù)個世紀，且在近代中國的記賬與商務上仍廣泛使用。后來出現(xiàn)機械計算器。

19世紀

巴貝奇將計算工具的概念更往前推，試圖創(chuàng)建第一個可編程式計算器，但他建造的機器太重了，因而無法操作。

20世紀

20世紀70年代開始，微處理器技術被吸納進計算器制程，最初的微處理器是Intel于1971年為日本名為Busicom（日語：ビジコン）的計算器公司生產(chǎn)的，1972年惠普推出第一款掌上科學計算器HP-35。

概觀

在過去，諸如算盤、納皮爾骨頭、數(shù)學表書籍、工程計算尺或機械加法機（adding machine）在數(shù)值計算上扮演輔助角色。計算器這詞原本指的是以紙筆運行數(shù)學計算的職業(yè)人士，這樣的半手動計算工作既繁重又易出錯。

現(xiàn)代的計算器以電力為動力，且擁有從便宜、信用卡尺寸的簡易設備到附打印功能的特殊計算器等多種形狀與尺寸。

電子計算器

過去有些計算器像是今日的計算機一樣大，第一個機械計算器是桌面型機械設備，但很快被桌面型電力機械計算器取代，之后又被真空管、晶體管、集成電路邏輯線路等材料依序取代。今日大部分計算器是掌上型微電子設備。
