生平

出生在費城，求學于賓州。費城的印地安人與美國華人是他最早的民族學研究對象，并對他們所玩的局戲、牌戲深感興趣， 而邁入對各地傳統(tǒng)游戲的收集與研究。

庫林在芝加哥哥倫布紀念博覽會展覽各種棋牌游戲，遇到Frank Hamilton Cushing，以后兩人就一起研究。

1892年，庫林在賓州大學考古學與人類學博物館當任主管。1895年，他寫出第一本著作：《高麗游戲》（ Games），短短幾年又寫《印地安游戲》（American Indian Games）、《夏威夷游戲》（Hawaiian Games）、《菲律賓游戲》（Philippine Games ） 。

1903年，庫林成為布魯克林博物館中人類學部門的館長。

庫林著作頗多，他和務謹順等人對麻將等中國牌戲的研究至今也是重要書目。
